What Causes Elbow Pain?

I’ve helped a lot of patients handle elbow pain. There are a few common causes of elbow pain that I’ve seen in my adult patients:  

Repetitive Tasks

Elbow pain is often caused by repetitive tasks that put strain on the elbow joint. For example, if you work at a computer all day, you may start to experience pain in your elbows from typing. People who play tennis often develop elbow pain from all the backhand strokes they do. Even people who drive trucks for a living can get chronic elbow pain just from holding a steering wheel for hours every day. 


Elbow injuries can also cause chronic pain. For example, falling on an outstretched arm will jam your wrist, elbow and shoulder which could lead to joint malfunction of those areas.  Improper handling of the joint malfunction could then lead to chronic pain in each of those areas to include the elbow!  So, after a fall go to a chiropractor! 

Pinched Nerves

In many cases, elbow pain can be a symptom of a pinched nerve in the neck. When a nerve in the neck is pinched, it changes the way you hold your arm, how you use your arm, and how you pick up things. This can lead to pain in the elbow which is unlikely to go away unless you get the pinched nerve handled. 

How to Fix Chronic Elbow Pain

If you have chronic elbow pain, it’s important to stop doing activities that exacerbate it. For example, if typing causes pain, take breaks from your computer throughout the day. Or if you participate in activities like tennis, you may need to take a rest for a few weeks to give your elbow time to heal. 

For long-term relief of elbow pain, you should see a chiropractor for regular adjustments. Chiropractic adjustments can help relieve elbow pain by restoring normal function to the joints and muscles in the arm. The theory behind chiropractic care is that when the joints and muscles in the body are in alignment, they can work together more efficiently. This allows the body to heal itself and relieves pain.
