Did you know that chiropractic care is not limited to the spine? Yes, we adjust necks, mid-backs and low backs. But we also adjust hips, knees, ankles and feet.
If you are suffering from pain in your feet, ankles, knees or hips, especially after standing for a long time, you may need to have your lower extremities adjusted. These joints can get out of alignment and once they are out of alignment, that is going to put your whole body at least slightly off balance.
When adjusting the lower extremities of my patients, I also check the alignment of your back at the same time. That’s so any alignment problems that started with the feet, knees or hips that affected your back can also be corrected.
Putting Each Chiropractic Patient on a Balanced Foundation
If I just adjust a patient’s back and then they get off the table onto misaligned knees, feet or hips, I think you can see how that would just throw everything off again. Adjusting the lower part of your body is all about putting you on a sound, balanced foundation. When you have that, it’s easier for the upper part of your body to stay in balance and pain-free.
Those misaligned extremities can cause all these problems:
- Aching feet
- Aching knees
- Hip pain
- Neck pain
- Low back pain
- Numbness in extremities
More Help for the Lower Body: Support For the Three Natural Arches of the Foot
Some people see so much improvement when they get the right support for their feet! There are 26 bones in the feet and many tendons and ligaments holding everything together. Each foot also has three separate arches—two that go the long way and one that crosses from left to right. This complex structure absorbs the shocks of running and walking for our whole lives! The correct support goes a long way to resolving not only foot pain but also misalignments or pain throughout the body.
We provide this support for patients who need it with custom orthotics. These are devices that fit into a patient’s shoe, provide support and correct the foot’s alignment when it strikes the ground.
Here are some of the conditions that can be improved or resolved with custom orthotics:
- Neck or back pain
- Plantar fasciitis
- Shoulder pain
- Hip pain
- Shoulder pain
Maintaining Your Chiropractic Improvements Longer
When I adjust my patients’ hips, knees, feet and ankles, I find that they experience a lot of relief. They can walk better, and stand longer. And they tend to hold their overall chiropractic adjustments longer!
If you find that you have to sit down after standing or walking for a little while, if you have trouble going up or down stairs, or if you are suffering from any of the kinds of pain I’ve mentioned here, I hope you will come see me. With adjustments of hips, knees, ankles and feet, we may be able to help. It could be that orthotics are the secret to your having a better foundation and overall balance, too!

About Dr. Dustan Mattingly: Dr. Dusty discovered chiropractic after it helped him recover from an injury he suffered while in the military. Chiropractic eliminated his neck pain, sparing him the ill effects of painkillers and surgery. He graduated from the Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa and then went on to study additional chiropractic techniques, the specialized treatment of sports and accident injuries and nutrition. He also mastered the art of Pressure Point Therapy to improve patients’ response to treatment. With this specialized technique, he found he could provide increased relief from pain and muscle dysfunction and help a patient recover more quickly from the effects of stress or injuries.
