Why You Should See a Chiropractor for Foot Pain

Some of my patients don’t realize that when they suffer from foot pain, they shouldn’t wait and they should come see me as soon as possible. Many patients have told me they have gotten great results from chiropractic treatment of their feet.

Each foot has 26 bones, 30 joints and more than 100 tendons, ligaments and muscles. That’s a lot of moving parts, so to speak! It’s easy for something to go wrong in such complicated structures.

Your feet have to support your entire weight. If feet and ankles are well-aligned and healthy, that helps your whole body stay balanced. All these bones and joints absorb the shock from each step taken, cushioning and protecting your ankles, knees, hips and lower back.

If your foot joints and bones are not aligned well, you can develop plantar fasciitis. This condition results from inflammation in a thick band of tissue that runs from your heel to the ball of your foot. The defining symptom is intense pain when you take your first steps in the morning. As you get moving, the pain lessens.

If you exercise (running or walking), you may suffer pain after exercising but not usually during exercise. This pain may cause you to change the way you walk or stand, which can then misalign the rest of your body so, it’s smart to get treatment for plantar fasciitis as soon as possible.

Correcting Plantar Fasciitis

There’s actually a number of ways a chiropractor can address pain from plantar fasciitis. Improving the alignment of the spine, hips, knees, ankles and feet is one way. If your neck or back are poorly aligned, your whole body can be slightly rotated or angled to one side or the other. This misalignment will put stress on many of your joints. This can result in pain anywhere, including your feet, and increase your risk of arthritis.

There are also stretches that can be used to reduce this inflammation along the sole of your foot.

Orthotics can further correct your alignment, balance and relieve stress on your feet. Orthotics are medical devices placed in your shoes that correct alignment of your feet and ankles. This change can be enough to rebalance the whole body, relieving pain from top to bottom. We provide custom orthotics, which address the exact situation you might have with poorly aligned feet and ankles.

Nutritional supplements may be useful to help your body heal the inflamed band of tissue of your feet.
